Groundnut, also known as peanut, monkey nut, earthnuts, goobers, goober peas, pindas, jack nuts, pinders, manila nuts and monkey balls is the fruit of Arachis hypogaea a member of the Fabaceae (legume) family that's native to South America. After pollination, the fruit develops into a legume 3 to 7 cm (1 to 2 in) long containing 1 to 4 (rarely 5) seeds, which forces its way underground to mature.
Groundnuts can be roasted, salted and eaten whole or used in cooked dishes. They're used a lot in South-east Asian cookery; satay is a spicy peanut sauce served with small skewers of grilled meat and chicken. Peanut or groundnut oil is widely used in cooking and margarine manufacture. Peanut butter is made from ground peanuts. Peanut oil is often used in cooking, because it has a mild flavor and burns at a relatively high temperature.
