Piri-piri (also peri-peri or peli-peli) is the name used in Portugese and also a number of African languages for the African bird's-eye chilli. The variations in spelling derive from the various pronunciations of the word in parts of Africa, although "piri-piri" is the correct spelling in Portuguese. In Portuguese cuisine, piri-piri is often used in preparing sauces and marinades for roast and grilled dishes, especially chicken and various fish. The chilli is the fruit of the chilli species Capsicum frutescens also known as the African devil or African red devil.
The plant has become naturalized in much of Africa and the seeds are often spread by birds (hence the English name).
This is a very hot chilli which is often found dried in African markets. This chilli plays a major part in the fiery food of Mozambique - chicken, fish, seafood and vegetables are all cooked with piri-piri. A sauce is also made from this pepper, which is also known as piri-piri.
The dried chilli is also found in piri-piri seasoning which also contains oregano, garlic and black pepper and is used as a rub for chicken.
