Note that these meat patties are made as commonly with lamb as they are with beef.

Ingredients:

1kg minced beef
2 onions, very finely chopped
2 tbsp tomato purée
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp freshly-grated nutmeg
4 ripe tomatoes, blanched and peeled
salt and black pepper, to taste

Method:

Combine the onion and minced beef in a bowl. Add the tomato purée, cinnamon and nutmeg then season to taste. Mix with your hands until completely combined then spread over a well-greased non-stick baking dish to a depth of about 4cm thick. Use a sharp knife to cut the meat mix into squares about 10cm per side.

Slice the tomatoes and place one tomato slice on top of each meat square. Transfer to an oven pre-heated to 180°C and bake for about 25 minutes, or until cooked through. Serve two slices per portion and accompany with rice or flatbread.
