I recently needed to quickly cook a hamburger without a grill, hob or oven. I’d recently purchased a microwave bacon crisper, that works really well for bacon and I thought it might work for a burger too.

Ingredients:

115g (1/4 lb) minced (ground) beef
2 tbsp red onion, finely chopped
1 garlic clove, minced
1 birds’ eye chilli minced (optional)
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Salt and freshly-ground black pepper, to taste

Method:

Combine all the burger ingredients in a bowl and use your fingers to mix them thoroughly together. Shape into a ball then pat into a round patty about 10cm (4 in) in diameter. Make a small, 2cm (1-inch) indentation or dimple in the centre of the patties. This way, they'll cook nice and evenly.

Season your patties with salt and black pepper then arrange on your bacon crisper, making sure they’re not too crowded. Cover with a sheet of greaseproof (waxed) paper and place them inside the microwave. Cook them for 1 minute and 30 seconds. Now flip them over and cook the other side for another 1 minute and 30 seconds.

You can, if you wish check that the beef patty is properly cooked. Insert your meat thermometer into the centre of the patties and check whether the temperature is around 71-74°C (160-165°F).
