Preparing this dish is simplicity itself. Drain the dill pickles and slice into rounds. Peel and finely dice the onion.
Remove the soused herring from its pickle and rinse.
Arrange the herring on a plate then set the dill pickles at the base of the herring. Arrange the diced onion at the junction of the herring and the pickle then serve.
