home made chili powder spice blend on a metal scoop
Outside the US, chilli powder is usually just ground cayenne pepper. But in the US it’s a more complex mix. If you read an US-based recipe and it calls for chilli powder then the recipe below is what you need.
Ingredients:
2 tbsp paprika
½ tsp smoked paprika
1 ½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp cayenne pepper
1 ½ tsp onion powder
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp ground cumin
Method:
Combine all the ingredients in a small bowl and stir well to combine.
Spoon the ingredients into a labelled jar. Seal securely and store in a cool, dark, cupboard. This spice blend will last for up to a year.
