Guava Squares is a traditional Namibian recipe for a classic sponge-type cake containing and flavoured with guava. The full recipe is presented here and I hope you enjoy this classic Namibian version of: Guava Squares.
Combine flour, baking power, salt and cinnamon. Melt the butter in a saucepan and beat-in the sugar, egg and vanilla until smooth. Stir in the guava and add this mixture to the dry ingredients. Pour into a greased 22 x 22cm square pan and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar. Bake in an oven pre-heated to 170°C (325°F/Gas Mark 3) for 30 minutes.
Allow to cool, tip out of the pan and cut into squares then serve as a tea-time treat.
The cake is sometimes topped with cream cheese icing and a guava jam glaze and served for dessert.
