A crumpet is a small griddle cake, or many call it a mix between a pancake and an English muffin. It has a similar central texture as bread. It is famous for its pretty holes and many love the crumpet because of the way the crumpet toppings dribble in the holes. I have a copycat recipe for the classic Warburtons crumpets on this site. Yet, whether you make your own crumpets or buy then ready-made you still need to toast them before serving. The most delicious crumpets are warmed by sticking on a toasting fork and toasting them before an open fire. However, the air fryer method works well in the modern kitchen.
Place up to four crumpets into the air fryer basket making sure they are not on top of one another.
Set the air fryer cook time to 2 minutes and the temperature to 180°C (360°F).
When the air fryer beeps add butter on top and cook for a further 1 minute at 200°C (400°F).
Serve as the butter drips down into the crumpet holes.
Most people simply add some butter to their crumpets and that is it. Personally, I prefer runny honey. Strawberry/blackcurrant jam or marmalade also work well. For those who prefer savoury toppings, then use pate or cream cheese. I also like soured cream with garlic chives.
