Tater tots are a classic American accompaniment made from parboiled and grated potatoes mixed with spices and bound with cornflour (cornstarch) that are shaped into small balls or croquettes and deep fried.
Ingredients:
5 medium-sized floury (mealy) potatoes
1 tbsp of cornflour (cornstarch)
1 tsp of salt
1 tsp of garlic powder
1/2 tsp of onion powder
1/2 tsp of ground black pepper
1/4 tsp of dried oregano, crumbled
2 tbsp seasoning (your choice) [I used
french fry seasoning]
Method:
Peel potatoes then bring a pot of water to a boil. Add the potatoes cook the potatoes and parboil for five minutes. Drain the potatoes, and set aside to cool.
Once cool enough to handle, grate potatoes. Transfer to a clean tea towel then wring out any excess liquid from potatoes.
In a small bowl, combine cornflour, salt, garlic power, onion powder, black pepper and crumbled oregano.
Add the grated potatoes to a larger bowl, then work in half of the dry mixture from the small bowl. When it is evenly mixed in, work in the remaining half of the dry mixture.
Using a melon baller or your hands, form individual tater tots.
Pre-eat the air fryer to 175°C (350°F) for 3 minutes. Spritz the tops and sides of tots with spray olive oil. Arrange in your air fryer basket and cook in your pre-heated air fryer for 8 minutes. Flip the tots and spritz again with olive oil. Continue cooking for another 4 minutes. Increase the temperature to 200°C (400°F) and cook for about 3 minutes or until tots reach the desired golden brown.
Remove the tater tots, toss in the seasoning and serve.
