Nettles are dioecious, that is, separate plants are either male or female. For seeds you only want the female plants. These are the ones with lots of flowers (male plants have much sparser flowers).

Ingredients:

flowering nettle stems

Method:

The easiest way to collect is to use thick garden gloves. Hold the plant in the middle then cut near the base with scissors. Place in a large basket and continue until the basket is full.

Now you need to get the seeds. This is much easier if the plant is dry. Having a conservatory, I usually arrange the plats well spread out on newspaper and then set in the sun for a few days until dry (you can also use a dehydrator on low setting).

Once the plants are dry, you can pick them up and not get stung. Use a sieve to collect all the nettle seeds, throw the stalks out. Now you can sprinkle them on your porridge in the morning, have them in smoothies, use instead of sesame seeds on bread or crackers, sprinkle them in salads or soups or just chew them on their own! Just make sure you don’t eat them too late because they could stop you from falling asleep.
