Caribische kruidenmix (Caribbean Spice Blend) is a traditional Bonairean recipe for a classic blend of herbs, spices and salt typically used as an all-purpose seasoning on the ABC Islands. The full recipe is presented here and I hope you enjoy this classic Bonairean version of: Caribbean Spice Blend (Caribische kruidenmix).

Though it says 'Caribbean' spice blend on the jar, this is actually a herby spice mix from the Dutch ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire and CuraƧao) that's the local go-to seasoning blend. It's the local equivalent of all-purpose seasoning and is often used to season meat before cooking. Think jerk seasoning without the hot chillies. Though not in the original ingredient list I like to add a little smoked paprika to mine but you can omit if you want to be more authentic. The original recipe also included MSG but I've omitted that here. As this is often used in the dishes of the islands' Chinese restaurants, I've used a mix of ordinary bay and Indian bay leaves for their cinnamon overtones
Ingredients:
1 tbsp onion powder
1 tbsp garlic powder
1 tbsp dried basil
1 tbsp dried thyme
2 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp ground allspice
1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
1 tsp sea salt
2 dried bay leaves
1 dried Indian bay leaf
Method:
Make sure the dried basil, dried thyme and bay leaves and well crumbled. Add these to the bowl then mix in the other ingredients.
Transfer to a jar with a secure fitting (ie air-tight) lid, secure the lid and store in a cool, dark, place. The spice blend will keep for up to 2 months.
