Apple Crumble: A British dessert of dessert apples baked with a flour, butter and sugar crumble topping.

Ingredients:

For the Fruit:
1kg Bramley cooking apples, peeled, cored and cut into chunks
1 tbsp water

For the Crumble Topping:
100g plain flour
50g butter
50g Demerara sugar

Method:

Place the apples in a saucepan with the water. Bring to a simmer and cook gently for about 4 minutes, or until just softened. Turn the resultant mixture into a greased 1l shallow ovenproof dish.

For the crumble, place the flour in a bowl, add the butter and rub into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar then scatter the mixture evenly over the apple base.

Transfer to an oven pre-heated to 170°C (gas mark 5) and bake for between 30 and 35 minutes, or until the filling is bubbling and the top of the crumble is golden brown.

Serve hot, accompanied by custard.
