‘Roedd hi’n arfer mewn rhai ardaloedd yn sir Benfro i baratoi’r cacennau hyn yn arbennig i’w rhoi’n galennig i’r plant ar ddydd Calan. Byddai gwraig y tŷ yn crasu dros hanner cant ohonynt ar y tro ar waelod y ffwrn frics, a chariai’r plant hwy adref mewn cas gobennydd ar eu cefnau. Fel rheol, caent ddwy gacen yr un ym mhob tŷ. Aent o ddrws i ddrws i ganu neu adrodd rhigwm yn dymuno’n dda i deuluoedd yr ardal ar ddechrau blwyddyn newydd.. Daw'r risét yma o Rhiwbina, Morgannwg.

30 o furum
60g o siwgr
15g o lard
15g o ymenyn
60g o gyrens
30g o bîl
ychydig o ddŵr a llefrith cynnes

Dull:

Rhwbiwch yr ymenyn a’r lard i’r blawd a chymysgu’r defnyddiau sych eraill drwyddynt. Toddwch y burum mewn ychydig o ddŵr cynnes a’i roi mewn pant yng nghanol y cymysgedd. Ychwanegwch ychydig o ddŵr a llefrith cynnes at y burum a gweithio’r defnyddiau sych i mewn iddynt yn raddol nes cael toes meddal. Gadewch i’r does godi am ryw bymtheng munud mewn lle cynnes. Yna ei dylino eto ar fwrdd pren a llunio cacennau bach crwn ohono. Lledwch y cacennau â rholbren a’u gadael i ail godi am ddeng munud. Trosglwyddwch i hambwrdd pobi, gosodwch mewn ffwrn boeth (200C) a phobwch am ryw ugain munud nes eu bod yn felyngoch eu lliw.

English Translation


These small buns, known also as cace were given to children as part of their calennig (New Year’s gift) on New Year’s Day in many districts in Pembrokeshire. The housewife would bake them in large quantities for this special occasion and the children would carry them home in clean pillowcases on their backs. Generally, each child would be given some two cakes at every house after he had wished the members of the household a very happy New Year. These wishes were frequently conveyed in verse or song. This particular recipe comes from Rhiwbina, Glamorgan.

Ingredients:

500g flour
30g yeast
60g sugar
15g lard
15g butter
60g currants
30g candied peel
warm milk and water mixture

Method:

Rub the fat into the flour and add the other dry ingredients.

Dissolve the yeast in a little warm water and pour into a well in the centre of the dry mixture.

Add the milk and water mixture gradually and work with the yeast into the dry ingredients to make a soft dough.

Set aside to rise in a warm place for about fifteen minutes.

Then knead on a floured board, and divide to form small balls.

Roll these out lightly with a rolling pin and allow to rise again for a further ten minutes.

Carefully transfer to baking trays then set in a hot oven (200C) and bake for about twenty minutes until golden brown.
