English Translation

This can be prepared either as a single large cake prepared in a cake tin (round or square) or as individual cakes prepared in a muffin tin. They can be served as a tea-time treat but also make an excellent appley pudding served warm with cream or custard. Traditionally this cake would be baked in a cast iron casserole (Dutch oven) in front of an open fire in some districts in Glamorgan. This recipe comes from Whitchurch, Glamorgan.

Ingredients:

280g self-raising flour
140g butter
140g demerara sugar
450g cooking apples, finely diced
a little milk

Method:

Rub the butter into the flour and add the sugar and the diced apple.

Mix with a little milk to make a fairly stiff dough.

Grease a shallow tin, flatten the dough evenly into it, then transfer to an oven pre-heated to 175C and bake for approximately half an hour. Serve warm.
